Problem

What made this hard

Traditional habit trackers use generic checkboxes, XP streaks, and task lists that feel commercial, aggressive, and culturally disconnected from personal chanting rituals. Devotional practice requires exact recitation counts (e.g. 7, 21, 108), persistent reading text, date-first calendar context, and high-trust local state that survives browser reloads.

Outcome

What changed

Designed and built a complete responsive web application around the Sacred Continuum model: a tactile split betel nut counting physics system, an embedded sticky PDF chanting reader, single-recitation timestamped timers, and date-anchored history. Replaced streak pressure with reflective rhythm metrics and respectful cultural metaphors.

The thesis

A practice-agnostic personal devotional companion that combines PDF chanting text, a tactile two-bowl betel nut recitation counter, timestamped session timing, and long-term calendar reflection without gamification or SaaS friction.

Why this, not that

I replaced abstract habit checkboxes and gamified streaks with a physical two-bowl betel nut counting metaphor and a date-anchored calendar. Instead of forcing users to navigate between reading and tracking, I created a split workspace that keeps the PDF chanting text sticky beside the recitation counter.

The interaction model was built specifically for multi-day devotional vows (e.g., 7 recitations per day over a 48-day practice) across varied stotrams, sahasranamams, and mantras, with explicit 108-recitation limits and timestamped duration tracking.
